Why a Runner Needs a Watch

I took up marathon running without knowing much about it. I did not know anyone who is into it nor do I have any experience to anything similar except for my morning jogs, but I got it into my head to sign up for a race. The way that I prepared for it also illustrated my ignorance. I just ran and ran thinking that it was enough preparation. Needless to say I did not finish that first race of mine, but I did learn some very valuable lessons from that experience that I can use if I was to go on with marathon which I did. To help out those who are new to long distance running here are two of the most important lessons that I learned: Have the Right Gear- I simply did not have the right gear when I went to run on my first marathon. I was wearing a t-shirt and cotton shorts which soaked up some sweat. I was also wearing the old footwear that I used for my morning jogs. It was adequate for simple runs but for long distance running it simply fell apart. Lesson: Get the best equipment that you can when doing marathon running. Now for my training I use a GPS running watch. It can be very handy. You can read Marius Bakken's The 100 Day Marathon Plan Review to find the right one for you. Be Ready- My biggest mistake was that I did not prepare for the marathon race in the right way. I just relied on my own knowledge which I am sorry to say was just not enough. If you are serious about marathon running then you need to use a training program. The best one is Marius Bakken 100 Day Program which uses techniques from some of the elite long distance runners in the world. That is the plan that I use for my own training now, and I can say that it is very effective.
